You know, I’ve always wondered: Would many of the people who love playing farming sims enjoy actual farmwork? Maybe not everyone has the diligence to wake up at the crack of dawn to milk the cows and till the fields, but that’s what videogames like Hay Day are for. And in Hay Day, you’ll be treated to one of the prettiest farming sims to date.

The backstory is simple: You’ve been left a huge farm to tend to. You’ll raise animals like chickens, cows, and sheep, and you’ll grow and harvest crops like wheat and corn. You’ll also have to juggle to myriad of tasks that goes into sustaining a grade-A ranch. Your critters must be fed and your silo must be painted, for example. Occasionally visitors from town or other farms will swing by, offering you tasks or money for your ware, like eggs or bread.

The biggest strength I notice is the graphics. Rich, beautiful detailed, with landscapes and zoom and pan, Hay Day’s presentation is fairly cinematic for a mobile game. It’s eye candy. The controls are also smooth, nonintrusive, and use the iPhone’s touch screen well. For example, just tap on a plot of land, then run your finger across the field to collect the grown crops. You’ll use the same gestural controls to gather sellable products your animals will yield, like wool or milk. You’re also able to visit your friends’ farms via Facebook.

Replay value comes in the form of achievements. Simply click on your house to view all of the achievements you’ve unlocked so far: Collect several hundred eggs for Egghead, for example, or get lots of milk from your cows for Got Milk? As far as item collection goes, you’ll have to wait in real-time before your farm’s products are ready to be collected and sold. It may take a few minutes for wheat to grow, or a half hour for cows to produce milk. You can speed up the process by using diamonds, of which you have limited quantity, but can acquire more throughout the game.

Really, there’s nothing to complain about here, other than everything feels quite familiar. With FarmVille and its ilk, the social farming sim has been shoved down our throats for years, and Hay Day doesn’t introduce anything exceptionally revolutionary to revitalize or rethink the genre. It’s also a bit annoying how the tutorial holds your hand for the first 15 to 20 minutes of gameplay. “Now let’s collect the eggs.” “Now let’s build the stable.” It’s not a gripe with this particular game, per se, just a gripe with many sims in general. Perhaps games should stagger out the instructions by introducing challenges that players can dwell on before a new gameplay element or technique is added.

This is a browser based game and is free to play. My review of it will be more along the lines of, is it worth playing at all, as opposed to, is it worth buying or spending money on. Understand that whatever my conclusion is, it is entirely based on the time investment in the game and the kind of fun and results you can get. Anyway, moving on.

History of the Command and Conquer Series

A lot of the early successful RTS franchises were those that really saw Dune for the PC as something unique and interesting. Blizzard Entertainment jumped on it immediately and made a cartoony orcs and humans game.

Westwood Studios on the other hand saw the Dune atmosphere as perfect. Westwood created Command and Conquer and started the Tiberian Wars. In this game you could either play as The Global Defense Initiative or The Brotherhood of Nod. The game was a smashing success.

So much so that Westwood decided to pimp out the name Command and Conquer into a new franchises, Red Alert. Red Alert is a historical revisionist game in which Stalin goes back in time and kills off Hitler. Without Hitler The USSR is able to create a far more massive army and is able to go to war with Europe and America. This off shoot series would prove to be a massive success having two sequels all revolving around the idea of time manipulation.

In the second of the series a mind bending profession takes over the USSR and uses this new power to make a direct invasion of the United States of America lead of course by none other than David Hasselhoff (THE HOFF).

In the third of the series (and most recent Command and Conquer game) Red Alert 3 sees another time manipulation as two generals of the USSR go back in time with a scientist and assassinate Albert Einstein who of course invented nuclear weapons hence toppling the massive American advantage. The final game in this series was star studded with Tim Curry (Rocky Horror Picture Show) as the Russian Premier, Jonathan Pryce (Tomorrow Never Dies/Pirates of the Caribbean) as The British PM, JK Simmons as the US President, George Takei as the Japanese Emperor, Jenny McCarthy as Tanya, and Peter Stromare (Armageddon) as the scientist.

A second off shoot series was created called “Generals.” Generals would emphasize real world command and conquer decisions. The game was split into three factions. These three factions were all unique including one that was a terrorist faction. It is always kind of interesting to see a suicide bomber take out a tank…. or a player retaliate with nukes. A second Generals game is on the horizon with an expected 2013 launch.

Westwood Studios successes were not ignored. In 1998 Electronic Arts acquired the studio outright interested in developing the Command and Conquer intellectual property to it’s fullest. EA expanded the Tiberiun Sun story further by creating a large collection of Tiberiun Sun games, including a first person shooter called Renegade. EA published three more Tiberiun Sun games Command and Conquer 2, 3, and 4.

As usual, you are given a small and barely built castle which you need to make a kingdom out of it. The bulk of gameplay remains what you are familiar with if with past experience with any strategy titles. Construct buildings within the castle, manage the production and consumption of resources, train different army units, unlock various Arts of warfare (similar to researches), send troops into battles against NPC or other players, and find allies for mutual benefits. All the basic concepts – build, upgrade, train, research and battle – are still the backbone, but with some twists here and there.

The game is quest-driven. Uniquely, quests are audible in the game, due to the voiceover added to each quest. It’s quite a fresh experience of itself. But if you are not a fan of story or plot hidden in the quest texts, you can always choose to turn off it and have your usual way, directing coming to the quest goal and getting it done to move forward. The in-game quest chain not only offers certain guidance but also rewards generously with resources, coins and Sapphires, the premium currency.

Stormfall handles the premium currency quite differently from what we usually see in other game. You can acquire a lot of Sapphires by finishing quests and leveling up, and, of course, need them in large quantity in many aspects. On one hand, Sapphires get you the usual paid advantages such as instantly finishing construction, training and other ongoing projects and extra supplement of resources and stronger units; on the other, they are simply the one only way to build up the defensive facilities of your kingdom. The walls, towers, gates, catapults and ballista of different levels as well as all the defense-enhancing Improvements items in the game don’t take building slots or take times to finish, but are all consume Sapphires, a large number of them, to construct. So even though you can gain Sapphires by playing, you can’t afford spending them on the usual paid advantages. The advantages are still saved for those who are willing to pay.

You can get access to battles in the starting levels. You don’t really train any army units, but purchase them once you’ve unlocked them by activating the corresponding Arts. Still, you have the restriction of slots and queues and need to wait for the closure of a purchasing activity. Battles start with the fights against NPC opponents but will get to the attack against other players very soon.

In the world map, you can see other lords’ castles and many NPC locations. You can raid some NPCs’ caves to gain XP, resources and sometimes the liberated units. And you can also help defend some of the NPC villages from being raided by other players, which is the first form of player conflicts you will experience. Sometimes, when the villages you suppose to protect are under attack by other players and in danger, you will receive a message that asks you to reinforce with more army units. And you can also launch attack against other players. The strategy’s role in the war is reduced as both the units’ matching relationship and military maneuver are simplied. In-game war is all about dispatching army units and then receiving the battle report. With all those well-built defenses, it is kind-of waste that we can’t really take part in the battle or even see the battle scene.

You need friends. That seems to me the strongest link between the strategy genre with the Facebook platform. The game kind-of forces upon the invite-friend spam obviously. There are quests asking you to invite friends and add them as allies (though it’s possible you can just select players on the world map and add them as allies) or send resources as gifts to friends. And it requires you to add 10 friends to further expand; otherwise, you can but spend Sapphires, 500 needed to enlarge from the initial 68*68 to the successive 72*72. Besides, you can gain a lot of other benefits from added friends like free resources and coins collected simply by visiting. While it’s possible for you to continue playing with allies but without Facebook friends, it will be much easier and more comfortable with Facebook friends in the game.

Stormfall: Age of War makes some nice changes in some systems but still falls into the category of convention in the core. It has detailed graphics, diverse contents and fair game pace. Yet, part of the fun drains away with the missing deep strategy and challenge. It is comfortable and suitable for players new to the strategy genre, but requires further tweaks to appeal to strategy veterans.

Angry Birds Star Wars came as a shock. We expected series creator Rovio Entertainment to dream up new ways to expand the franchise. A potential blockbuster deal with Lucasfilm (recently sold to Disney for roughly $4 billion) wasn't at the top of the list. That said, the highly anticipated video game, slated to arrive November 8 for iOS, Android and other platforms, will most likely have tremendous staying power for months to come, and for good reason, as it appears to be the perfect marriage between one of the most successful smartphone/tablet games of all time, and the sci-fi super power set in a galaxy far, far away.

With this in mind, Rovio has been tight-lipped on specific features, teasing its fans on the officialAngry Birds Tumblr with beautifully-illustrated pictures from Star Wars: Episode IV, complete with birds and pigs alike, along with teaser videos that showcase short snippets of gameplay.

That said, it appears that Angry Birds Star Wars retains the critically acclaimed and reliable slingshot mechanics that made this IP a worldwide sensation, but with Star Wars window dressing. To that end, the characters have taken on new personas. The familiar red bird, for instance, is Luke Skywalker, complete with blue lightsaber and Tatooine fatigues. The pink bird, on the other hand, was transformed into Princess Leia, signature hair buns perfectly intact. Other characters include the yellow bird playing that scoundrel, Han Solo, bomb bird as Obi-Wan Kenobi, the white bird as C-3PO and an egg filling in for R2-D2.

Of course, it wouldn't be an Angry Birds game without their foes, the pigs. As expected, the diabolical swine take on the visage of the evil Empire. Seduced by the dark side of the Force, King Pig plays Darth Vader, while his minions dress up as Stormtroopers, AT-AT drivers, Snowtroopers and other villains.

Based on what we've seen of the game in action, this is more an evolution of Angry Birds Space. One scene, taking place during the epic Battle of Yavin from Episode IV (where the first Death Star gets destroyed), features gravity manipulation that takes a page directly from Space, with C-3PO and R2-D2 eliminating pigs designed to resemble TIE Fighters. On a side note, C-3PO appears to break apart, with the pieces causing further damage around the screen, while his counterpart seems to possess an electrical attack.

In yet another scene, this one taking place outside the famous Mos Eisley Cantina on Tatooine, Luke Skywalker bird delivers a swirling lightsaber attack that decimates pigs dressed as Sand People, AKA Tusken Raiders. Then, while on Hoth from The Empire Strikes Back, Leia blasts an AT-AT with lasers, causing the mechanical contraption to topple over, resulting in a chain reaction; all the birds thus far have abilities unlike those in previous Angry Birds games.

Naturally, we still have many unanswered questions. Rovio already admitted to creating level packs based on the films, but hasn't mentioned which movies will come with the initial download; we speculate Episode IV: A New Hope will kick things off. For now, though, Angry Birds Star Wars appears to be another promising extension for both brands, and unless the developers somehow mess this up, we expect it to become one of the hottest titles this holiday season and beyond.
